The Southern California section of Institute of Food Technologists honors Phillip S. Tong, Ph.D,, with its 2015 Distinguished Achievement Award. Dr. Tong was selected for his dedication, unique service to IFT, and supreme effort on behalf of the food industry and its related businesses. This yearly award honors an individual who has provided continuing and meritorious service to the food science and technology industry, particularly in the southwest United States.

Not everyone can say they’ve spent over 30 years studying, researching, teaching and developing dairy foods like Phillip S. Tong, Ph.D. For half a life time, he has forged a career with rewards and challenges surrounding cow’s milk and the tasty products that come from Mother Nature’s nearly perfect food. Dr. Tong will relay anecdotes of his hours in food science as a scientific lecturer, mentor, writer, publisher and motivator. His reflections during the evening presentation will inspire other food scientists to consider how they also approach their daily challenges and pivotal career decisions. Dr. Tong puts it all into context: is food science a job or a profession or a career? Or an out-right adventure!

About Our Speaker

Phillip S. Tong is Professor of Dairy Science at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He has served the food industry through his over 27 years of teaching, research, and outreach activities in dairy foods science and technology.  He has organized and instructed a wide range of dairy foods short courses and symposia annually for industry held throughout California and teaches several undergraduate and graduate dairy foods courses. In addition, he was an instructor for five years in the IFT pre-annual meeting short course on Health and Wellness Ingredients.  He was instrumental in establishing Cal Poly’s Dairy Products Technology Center and he served as its Director for over 15 years. The Center has assisted a number of companies in the development of a wide range of food, ingredients and processes. In addition, Professor Tong has appeared in televised segments on dairy foods for the History Channel (Modern Marvels of Milk) and Public Broadcasting System (PBSkids Dragonfly TV).

Professor Tong is a recognized expert in dairy foods ingredients science, technology and applications. He has co-authored over 100 dairy foods publications, contributes a quarterly column in Dairy Foods Magazine and has given over 300 presentations in 10 countries. He has mentored 30 MS students at Cal Poly. He was appointed as a member of the American Dairy Products Institute Center of Excellence in 2014 and he has served as President of the American Dairy Science Association, Member of International Dairy Federation Committee on Dairy Science and Technology, Past Chair of the Dairy Foods Division of Institute of Food Technologist, Board of Directors of the Federation of Animal Science Societies, and Section Editor for the Journal of Dairy Science.  He has received numerous awards including: the American Dairy Science Association Award of Honor in 2014, the American Dairy Products Institute Award of Merit in 2013, Cal Poly Graduate Studies and Research 2014 Career Award in Recognition for Securing Over $10 million, and the International Dairy Foods Association Dairy Research Award of the American Dairy Science Association in 2006.
